For over ten years, I worked with Joe Schifilliti, MD defending many cases in which Joe represented his sizeable medical group, serving as Risk Manager and functioning as Claims Manager. Some yielded wins for the defense, and others were settled. These results were achieved because Joe understood when to stand firm and defend the medicine. And just as important, he also recognized the value of settling some cases of unexpected medical outcomes. Joe was adept at educating his people on why making a significant payout was sometimes warranted. In the long run, a proper settlement saves time and energy while avoiding negative publicity. I have successfully settled numerous mediations of medical malpractice claims where Dr. Joe Schifilliti acted as Risk Manager and chief negotiator for his medical organization. I worked closely with Joe Schifilliti, MD on many occasions while he was Chief of Risk Management for The Southeast Permanente Medical Group in Atlanta, Georgia. Some of these resolutions resulted from direct negotiations with Joe, while other were a result of mediation. In all instances, Joe exhibited sensitivity and empathy for the struggles my clients faced and worked diligently to find common ground and determine if a resolution was possible.
